Meet our Wednesday Wonder Woman -
Maria de Sousa, founder of Posture Awareness
In our digital age and with the increasing amount of time we spend in unnatural postures, Maria is doing a wonderful job of teaching body and posture awareness. Good posture is key for confidence and pain free living.
When you were a little girl, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be a teacher of some sort, I love interacting with people and speaking to audiences.
What do you do now? For work? For fun?
I am a Posture Educator and a Yoga Teacher – don't really like the word teacher in this context because when it comes to yoga I do not feel that I am teaching anything but creating conditions for people to find the movements in their bodies, the body is very intelligent and needs no teaching, it knows better we just need to get the mind out of the way.
For fun and spiritual nourishment, I love walking in the country side. I have just moved to Canterbury in Kent and I am so much enjoying exploring the area, going to village markets and buying affordable organic local vegetables, duck eggs, heaven!
How did you get into your area of expertise?
Through my yoga teacher trainings and currently the Feldenkrais Method teacher training; studying with teachers such as Katie Bowman (US) and I do my own research and self studying.
I also like to work with osteopaths and chiropractors and see their perspective on posture.

What obstacles have you faced in following your dreams and how have you overcome them?
Well, my office day job was in the way so I had to let that go. Also, believing in myself and that I had enough knowledge to come out with my dream. There was a time when I was obsessed (passionate, I should say!) with doing as much as I could so there was that 'one more course, one more workshop, one more teacher' which was stopping me from coming out of my insecurity zone but slowly I have realized that there was no end to my studies and then I left my day job and that was it, I plunged into my dream and there is not way back now
What’s the best part of what you do?
Making people feel good about themselves and empowering when they realize that that is what good posture brings to them.
What advice do you have for other women who might want to follow suit?
Follow nothing but your heart.

What’s your morning routine?
Meditation and yoga

Work on my power point presentations to schools an businesses

What are you working on at the moment? Next project?
A marketing video. Short videos about how to have good posture in doing things such as eating and driving.

Would that be too selfish of me to say myself because ultimately I am the one that needs to get the work done, and I am proud! But if I had to name one, my mother of course, she is a fighter.
