Why I dumped dirty water on my head and donated to:

The Ice Bucket Challenge craze started in the US and has also been filling Facebook feeds in the UK for sometime now.

A challenge that has reportedly raised an incredible £48 million for ALS in less than a month in a flood of donations from more than 1.7 million people!

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death.

Watching videos of people having ice cold water dumped on their heads has been great fun and what an incredible amount of money raised for ALS!

However, I couldn't help but wonder how many people actually knew why they were doing the challenge, what ALS is and if they were donating? Also, do they know, or care where their hard earned cash goes?

Pamela Anderson casued some controversy when she declined the IBC due to ALSA's policy on animal testing: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/22/pamela-anderson-rejects-ice-bucket-challenge-animal-testing_n_5698854.html

I also felt uncomfortable with the amount of water being wasted and thought I would probably donate to a charity of my choice and decline the challenge.

Then my lovely friend Lucy nominated me and there began my dliema...

As someone who's always up for a bit of fun and not someone to turn down a challenge for a good cause, I had some thinking to do.

Ha- love this pic!

How could I accept the IBC without wasting water and could I do it for a charity of my choice!?- OF COURSE I COULD!

The water part was more difficult- I thought about throwing myself in the Thames, but didn't really have the time to do that in the 24 hours given. I would have otherwise- honestly!

Then I found Matt Damon's video.

Matt co-founded www.water.org so decided to use toilet water, instead of clean drinking water, to throw over his head! That's it I thought!?

Ah, I don't have 8 toilets to collect water from like Matt Damon, what now?

Then while washing up- eureka! I would save that... greasy, dirty water, put some ice in it and chuck that over my head- brilliant! :-/

So that's what I did:

Brrr! Ice Cream Headache!

Please donate whatever you can afford to charities of your choice, with or without chucking ice water over your head- I challenge you to come up with something different.

Lee, Becky, Helen, you have 24 hours!

Be Brave, Be Bold, You're Beautiful!

x Louise
